Good Personal Hygiene: A Guide To Good Health & Life


The roadway to a beautifully maintained body is to pamper your body with plenty of care and love. Hygiene, therefore, is utmost important aspect to show your body that you really care for it.  Practicing personal hygiene helps you to live a healthy lifestyle. From a simple perspective, hygiene means to be clean. Hygiene is the principle of maintaining cleanliness, as well as grooming of the external body.


Personal hygiene helps to prevent you from various germs including virus, bacteria, fungi, protozoa, pollutants etc that give birth to several diseases and infections. Someone who adheres to body hygiene will be better equipped to fight any sort of disease or illness. Habits such as washing your hands, flossing, bathing, brushing may look monotonous and boring, but they all come under important personal hygiene. They make you feel good about yourself and keep you away from the risks catching illnesses.

Maintaining a high level of personal hygiene helps to increase a person's confidence and self-esteem. If your body is clean and taken care of externally as well as internally, it will definitely helps you to feel good. It, many a times, depends upon the culture in which we live. 'Culture,' in this context does not mean just the country or city you live in, it also means the group in which you spend most of your time. It is necessary to maintain personal hygiene not just for the sake of your own health. There is lot of other factors like; you may judge a person by their personal hygiene, it gives you a picture of the person's personality.

Here I give you few techniques which when you follow can help you remain hygienic and healthy            :

Hand Washing

Most infections, especially colds and gastroenteritis, are caught when we put our unwashed hands in our mouth. You should always wash your hands, after using the toilet, before making or eating food, after handling dogs or other animals and if you have been around someone who is coughing or has a cold.

Climate such as in India is generally hot and humid. This can regenerate tons of germs on your body and clothes. Taking bath everyday is very crucial to fight with diseases causing germs. One can indulge natural cleansers such as fullers' earth, yogurt, and milk and gram floor to cleanse body.

Personal Hygiene for Women

Down south is where things get really dirty. Women are always at higher risk of having vaginal infections. Thus, cleanliness of genitals plays a big role to maintain women's wellbeing. The vagina can be cleaned just by washing the external genitals. Do not put anything like douches into the vagina, as the delicate skin can be damaged. Here are some personal hygiene suggestions for women:

  • Menstruation– wash your genital area, change tampons and sanitary napkins regularly, at least four times a day.
  • Cystitis– is an infection of the bladder. This is a common condition for sexually active young women. Urinating after sexual intercourse can help to flush out any bacteria that may be in the urethra and bladder.
  • Thrush– some soaps and detergents can irritate the skin of the vagina, and make thrush infections. So use mild soap, avoid tight and synthetic underwear.

Personal Hygiene for Men

A build-up of secretions called smegma can form under the foreskin of men. Gently pull back the foreskin when you have a shower and clean with water. You can use soap if you like, but make sure you rinse it off well.

While travelling, take special care of hygiene. Suggestions include; drink only bottled water, use sanitizers before eating, use toilet seat sanitizers before using a toilet, use hanky while sneezing and use a facial mask when exposed to pollution. 

Treating Body Odor

Body smell is caused by number of factors including chemicals in sweat, the actions of bacteria that live on the skin and feed on dead skin cells, unwashed clothes, such as underwear and socks. Therefore, change undergarments everyday and use mild deodorants. Squeeze a lemon, put rosewater or a piece of alum in bathing water as they are useful in removing body odor.

Keep your Mouth Smell & Germ Free

The freshness of your breath is the ambassador of your words. You may be whispering the sweetest words into someone’s ear, but if you smell like you just have eaten a filthy Pig, it’s going to be a turnoff no matter what. So, brush your teeth twice a day to keep bad smell and cavity at bay. You can use herbal things such as neem's leaves, babool stick, salt, clove oil, etc to massage teeth and gums. Brush your tongue too as it could be the cause of bad breath.

Trim your Nails

Keep your finger and toe nails trimmed and in good shape. This will help prevent germs and dirt which is carried by nails. If possible, trim them weekly and brush them daily with soap so that no dirt or residue remains beneath the nail.

Take care of your Hair

Washing your hair at least twice a week is important to keep hair and scalp healthy. If you suffer from lice or dandruff, then take necessary action at the earliest. You can use neem oil, fenugreek powder with curd, gooseberry juice or henna paste to treat scalp infections.

Hair Removal

Shave your under arms and legs regularly, but with care. Use a new blade if you are going to shave with a manual razor. Never use anyone's blade or trimmer as they can spread deadly infections even HIV. Using of moisturizer after hair removal can aid to soft skin and smoothens inflammation.  

Therefore, hygiene is one of those things everyone is expected to know but no one ever talks about. Understand the importance of good personal hygiene and live a healthy and harmonious life.
