“She is the consciousness transcending all things, she is the emptiness beyond all things, and she is the smiles, the divine beauty beyond all earthly beauties.” By Francois Gautier.
A woman, in her life time, plays numerous important roles that make her very different from a man. Every single role that she plays holds high regards in its own way. If we deeply ponder about our birth, growth, success or survival on this planet earth, then we will definitely realize the fact that these are the only and only contribution of a woman whom we dearly call ‘mother’. She is the one who goes beyond day and night bearing and rearing us to make us healthy and fateful children in the society. She takes all bitterness and gives us sweetness that makes our lives as sweet as honey, like trees take Carbon dioxide and provide us oxygen which makes our survival possible on this earth. That is why the Islam teaches us that “Paradise lies under the feet of mother.” It means a mother is the ultimate source of happiness, peace and prosperity. Hence, it is evident that a woman’s role in the life of an individual is immeasurable and can’t be paid back in the context of what she does throughout her life time.
But it brings a disheartening and frightening sense to think of the degree of violence against women in our society, state, country and even throughout the whole world. Violence against women has become common news in India as well as outside India. Any daily news paper or T.V. news is never complete without a new of violence against women. Rape, human trafficking, dating violence, stalking, violence against women with disabilities, Acid throwing, dowry deaths, abduction are some of the modern social evils which are daily happenings far and wide.
Even after so much of development in the sphere of education, culture, politics and economy man has transformed himself into a bestial animal like inhuman creature. He has not developed his morality and spirituality. He has fixed his mind set up to be superior, more powerful and having more strength than a woman. How irony is it that man worships a female goddess in one side and hurts a female hardly on the other side?
Therefore, now the time has arrived to bring about a drastic revolution in the safety and empowerment of women. It is very difficult to root out the problem of violence against women easily, as it is deep-rooted to the ancient era. But if we work now seriously to stop this social evil then we can bring a ray of hope for the present as well as the next generation to come. We can, thus, approach towards certain strategies through which we can ensure the safety of women. First and for most, as a responsible citizens, it is our fundamental duty to contribute towards bringing an order to ensure dignity and respect for women so that they can also enjoy her human rights and fundamental rights with sense of pride, freedom and confidence.
Secondly, we must reform in police system. Allocation of women police in every area and their continuous monitoring which also requires participatory attitudes of govt. This also requires installation of CCTV cameras at strategic places, beefing up the police security systems and closely monitoring them. Apart from this, reforms in our legal system is necessary such as stringent punishment which are non boilable in nature. This could act as friction to those who perpetrate crime. We must have remedial or curative measures such as fast track courts especially dedicated to deal only with these offences and crimes. These can be made responsible to clear the cases on day to day basis with fair trial as its core principle.
Thirdly, we need to bring about a change in various customs, traditions and certain sets of religious beliefs. Because these customs have a deep rooted place in the core of our minds and hearts of every people of our society which has defined our lifestyle, our thoughts, our expressions and our beliefs be it man or a woman. This has given to the males, the feeling of masculinity in every aspect of their acts and thoughts. So, now onwards we should start practicing equal preference and rights between boy and girl child so that the feeling of masculinity will one day disappear from our society.
Fourthly but very importantly, women should maintain their personal safety by themselves. The crucial component in self-defense is awareness: awareness of oneself, her surroundings, and her potential attacker’s likely strategies. Use your six senses because our intuition is a powerful subconscious insight into situations and people. Every woman should get some self-defense trainings. They should try to escape from that place as soon as they feel that something wrong is going to happen to them. It is important for them to understand that they can and should defend themselves physically, and should take action suddenly. Special care should be maintained while traveling to new and remote places. Attention also should be paid to avoide car-jacking. They also must maintain safety in cyberspace, for it can be full of danger if one isn’t careful.
It is not enough only to provide safety to women, but women empowerment is equally important for a model society. The term “empowerment of women” could be understood as the process of providing equal rights, opportunities, and power positions to women so that they are able to play a role on par with men in society. Some of the important strategies would act as prominent detergent in the national level in order to fasten the process of women empowerment. Firstly women should obtain greater participation in politics. In the village level women should be encouraged to actively participate in the Panchayati Raj system. To achieve this goal the male members of the family must encourage them to do the same. Secondly, there should be introduced more and more income generating schemes for women. They should be given self-employing trainings so that they can start their own income sitting at home. Thirdly, increasing female literacy level is the most important strategy in the way of women empowerment. It is through being literate one can develop his/her personality, morality, thought process and self-dignity. It is with the help of literacy, women would be able to lead a life of self-reliance.
Apart from the above discussion, in the family and village level, people should be determined to empower their own wives, sisters, daughter and relatives. All of them must bring a big change in their perception that women are also as capable as men and they should be provided opportunities for their development as like as men. Girls must be vested power to take their own decision in the family set up so that it can be carried on in later time. In family itself they should be made free to do things as per their own choices. In some situation, women don’t know the real purpose and aim of their own lives. It is very well known fact that women are the real enemy of women. In families, women in the form of mother-in-laws, sister-in-laws or in other form, treat other women badly. So, if we want to empower women, women should also start giving respect and chance to enjoy women rights to other women.
To conclude with, it could be said that violence against women happens in our society because we, i.e. men, want to make it happen knowingly or unknowingly. Swami Vivekananda says, “Women will work out their destinies- much better, too, than men can ever. All the mischief to women has come because men undertook to shape the destiny of women.” Therefore, we all, men society, must work together to stop violence against women. Let’s give a space for women empowerment in our hearts, in our minds and in our words. Another big thing that we can do is to pray for the women group for their safety and empowerment in the society. Thus, we can bring a change in our perception and practice for the same, and then we can set an example for others which would positively affect their life too. As we are going to celebrate the world women’s day on 8th March, let’s see a vision of violence free society for women, and let’s work on that faithfully. With this attitude, it is sure; we will destroy this social evil from our society and provide peace, harmony and prosperity among women, which would ultimately bring about a just society.
“There is no hope of rise for that family or country where there is no estimation of women, where they live in sadness. For this reason, they have to be raised first; and ideal Math has to be stated for them.” (Manu, III, 56).
