Portable Water Filter for Safe Drinking Water

Water filter

Did you know that over 1 billion people do not have an access to safe drinking water worldwide? In various parts of the world most of the water that humans consume can be contaminated with bacteria, unacceptable levels of toxins or waste that is actually unsafe for consumption. Drinking contaminated water can lead to chronic illness that can be fatal.

LifeStraw, the winner of Time Magazine “Invention of the Year” is one of the latest solutions offered to combat the issue of contaminated water. This advanced, compact, ultralight personal water filter does not contain any chemicals, iodinated resin, batteries or any breakable parts that can cause a wear and tear of the product. The LifeStraw features a high flow rate and weighs only 2oz (56 gms).

What is Life Straw?

LifeStraw is a water filter that been designed to filter water so that it is safe to consume. It is recommended that one LifeStraw should be used by one person only. LifeStraw can filter about 1000 litres of water, the approximate consumption made by one person in a year. LifeStraw removes 99.9999% of waterborne bacteria and 99.9% of parasites, thus ensuring that there is no water contamination and the water is safe to consume.

How do I use it?

This unique invention allows you to drink directly from puddles and streams. You can also fill a bottle with the water and sip it with the LifeStraw.  Prime the filter membrane before use by inserting the base of the straw into the contaminated water for at least 30 seconds, keeping the mouthpiece dry.  Take 5 quick sucks to get the water flowing. It takes roughly 3-5 seconds of sucking to start the flow of water through the filter through a dry membrane.

When finished drinking, blow a breath of air back down into the LifeStraw to purge the remaining water out, shake, and recap. If you drink from murky water and the water flow stops, blow back into it to purge the water and mud from the filter.

You can clean the LifeStraw at home by drinking some tap water from it and leave it to dry with the caps off. This should be a perfect companion to ensure safe drinking water for the ultra-light backpacker, travellers and those living in areas where there is water contamination.
