Tips to Maximize Protection from Mosquitoes


Mosquitoes are tiny insects with wings that have a needle-like stinger. The female mosquito especially is always on the lookout for blood as it needs blood to make its eggs. The female mosquito sinks its needle-like stinger into any part of your body that is exposed. It then injects chemicals to stop the blood clotting, then sucks up blood. That is when you get a very itchy spot.

Now when these adult mosquitoes sting you, they inject the chemicals into the blood and any disease they are carrying gets transmitted into your body too. Mosquitoes can give a small rash and itching. But they can also carry diseases like Malaria and Dengue Fever. Many individuals who get infected do not show any symptoms immediately but within few days they will develop a fever, headache, muscle aches and fatigue after a bite. The illness typically lasts three to six days. Approximately one in 150 people will acquire more serious illnesses.

Mosquitoes mostly lay their eggs in still standing water and also near where there is human or animal blood easily available. Later the eggs hatch and become larva which lives in water and this larva again change into an adult mosquito.

How do we maximize protection from mosquitoes:

Research shows that mosquitoes are highly attracted to Carbon dioxide, the gas we blow out when we exhale. They are also attracted to lactic acid, which is released when we sweat. So people doing physical activity with an increased rate of breathing and sweating are especially attractive to them.

  • Mosquitoes are most active at dusk and dawn. Put on lots of insect repellent before you go out and do not forget to apply it on your feet and ankles also.
  • Wear a long-sleeved shirt, long pants, and socks that cover most of your body parts. Avoid tight-fitting clothing as mosquitoes can bite through tight jeans also
  • Strong house fans used outside on a patio or deck can also help to keep these mosquitoes away
  • Burn a mosquito coil inside the house or near your patio or deck if you are sitting in your balcony or your garden.
  • Do not sit near still water. Keep swimming pool water treated and circulating
  • Eliminate standing water in plant pots, old tires, buckets, plastic covers, toys, or any other container where mosquitoes can breed.
  • Empty and change the water in bird baths, fountains, pet water bowls, pools and potted plant trays at least once a week to avoid any breeding of mosquitoes.
  • Install fly screens on doors and windows and if you have installed them then make sure there are no holes in it. If door and windows do not have screens then us mosquito net that is cover baby carriers and beds with netting.

  • Close doors and windows in the evening and also when you go outside.
  • Use insect spray in your house and close the doors for a while if there are mosquitoes in your house.
