The provision of clean and proper toilets could save the lives of more than 200,000 children in the world. Over one billion people defecate in the open due to lack of proper toilet facilities. The countries where open defecation is most widely practiced have the highest numbers of under-five child deaths. These countries also have high levels of under-nourished population and poverty, and large wealth disparities.
Why is World Toilet Day Celebrated?
In 2013, the UN General Assembly officially designated November 19 as World Toilet Day. It deemed the practice of open-air defecation as “extremely harmful” to public health.
World Toilet Day is coordinated by UN-Water in collaboration with governments and partners. World Toilet Day is an official United Nations international observance day, celebrated on 19 November, to raise awareness of the global sanitation crisis. World Toilet Day highlights a serious problem – 2.5 billion people in the world do not have access to proper sanitation. World Toilet Day is a call to action to reach everyone in the world so that their human right to sanitation is realized.
What is the theme for 2017?
The theme for 2017 is “wastewater.” By 2030, the Sustainable Development Goals aim to reach everyone with sanitation, and decrease the proportion of untreated wastewater and increase recycling and safe reuse. For this to be achieved, everyone’s waste has to be contained, transported, treated and disposed of in a safe and sustainable way.
Each year thousands of people join in on promoting World Toilet Day via social media campaigns, online petitions, and by getting involved in a range of events held in different countries worldwide.
What is the Importance of World Toilet Day?
Today, for billions of people around the world, sanitation systems are either non-existent or ineffective. Human waste gets out and killer diseases spread, meaning progress in health and child survival is seriously undermined. World Toilets Day is a brilliant step to create awareness to built toilets and sanitation facilities. Defecating in the open will minimize due to proper toilets leading to lower deaths among children and women.
Importance of Sanitized Toilets in our Life:

Cleaning with water alone does not make the toilets clean as water is the medium for bacteria’s to grow. Toilet sanitizers are the need of the hour to maintain personal hygiene.
